Have you made your house asthma-friendly?
The year 2020 has witnessed some of the tough times that the universe has ever seen in hundred years. The advent of a novel and potent coronavirus shattered the normal living style, giving way to mandatory work from home. Initially, leaders around the globe came all together in support. And, under the guidance and directions of WHO, countries underwent complete lockdown with only access to essential services. With all this came the trending slogan 'stay home, stay safe' that has been used throughout the interim of the lockdown period. Altogether, people came up to break the chain of social interactions/meetings.
Stay indoor, Stay ill
Interestingly this pandemic situation rejuvenated our Earth resulting in better and fresher air. The skies became much clearer and shinier than ever. But with the passage of time, the indoor air quality started degrading. It has also been estimated that indoor air pollution is two to five times worse than outdoor pollution.
Causes of indoor air pollution:
👉The probable cause of which includes buildings with mold spores, moisture, cockroaches, and likewise.
👉Also, tobacco and kitchen smoke inside the home played a crucial role by acting as an add-on powerful allergen.
👉The volatile organic compounds released from wall or wood paints also became a prime cause of poor air quality.
👉While poorly filtered air systems also contribute to spreading allergens and irritants, all over the closed place.
Implications:
Research
showed that deterioration in indoor air quality directly or indirectly
potentially triggered asthma, certain allergies, and respiratory related
issues. As a result, these issues contributed to weakening the immune system
and frequent exposure to cold and other diseases. Where small children,
older adults, and people with a poor immune system were found to be comparatively
more susceptible to such issues.
Solution:
To eradicate the pollutants and improve indoor air quality, one should identify the major causes of Indoor pollution primarily.
Home
- These include improving overall ventilation and reducing sources of contamination in the home.
- To prevent pest and mold triggers from impacting any respiratory related issues one should regularly remove garbage and store it outside.
- Instead of using harsh chemicals to remove mold, use mild soap, hot water, and a strong brush.
- Additionally, fix any leaks that might be a source of moisture and make sure that bathrooms are properly ventilated with an exhaust fan.
- Whereas, at closed workplaces try to implement a tobacco-free workplace policy and provide access to smoking cessation programs. This may also reduce all employees’ risks for lung diseases.
- Businesses can implement cleaning policies that include storing garbage outside, vacuuming and dusting weekly, and clean mold with mild soap, hot water, and a strong brush.
- Additionally, using Integrated Pest Management (IPM) is an economical and safe way to avoid exposure to harmful pesticides.
